Immature Stages of Tabanidae

Detailed information on immature stages of Tabanidae is being acquired. However, Clausen (1940) noted that the larvae are mostly aquatic or semiaquatic in habit and feed on various types of animal life in their habitat. A favored food is the larvae of Tipulidae and other groups of Diptera that inhabit the banks of streams and ponds, and snails and earthworms are also consumed. In Puerto Rico, Tabanus stigma F. develops in drying seaweed, the larvae feeding on those of sand flies. The eggs of most species are laid in large masses on foliage overhanging water or on stones or other objects nearby.
